We set out on a two-week trip to Italy determined to buy a dream home. After many meetings with agents and hours of driving from one end of Italy to another we were disillusioned with our progress. Yes, we had seen interesting properties but nothing that met our budget or tantalised us.
We spoke to Historic Italian Homes who mentioned that they knew of a property that would seem to meet our needs. From their description it seemed to fit the bill. We did a u-turn and drove 5 hours in the opposite direction towards Umbria. We had agreed to meet Karen and Steve the very next day. We decided to go and have a look at the village before we met them. The village was enchanting.
When we met Steve and Karen they explained their vision for the house. To be honest we were shocked at the mess of the interior and found it difficult to see through the years of dirt. However meeting with Historic Italian Homes was a big advantage as they made us feel comfortable and they could help us see the dream. The piece of garden available with the house had the most spectacular view and it was then that our hearts we taken.
Once we saw other restorations and met with their contacts we were sold. We only made one trip to Italy again and Historic Italian Homes handled the legal aspects, project management of the refurbishments including kitchens, bathrooms and all materials. Together we spent many hours on the telephone and e-mail discussing intricate details of the house layout, staircases and electrical plans.
This has been a dream come true. We have made great Italian friends. Now we are planning how to spend long warm days in the sun hopefully speaking our improving Italian language with our new Italian friends.
